Los Angeles Professional & Guaranteed Lice Treatment & Removal
Policies and School Screenings
Many private and public school districts have adopted either a "No-Nit" and/or "Live-Bug-Only" policy to eradicate head lice from their schools. While these policies may be necessary, they have flaws and do not fully resolve the issue of lice within schools.
A "No-Nit Policy" means any child with nits is excluded from school. While we support the policy, as it is enacted in order to protect other children from the spread of head lice, we believe it needs some modifications to prevent long term absentees from school. We believe that the nurse, or caregiver, who has searched thoroughly for lice has discovered one or two nits, should remove the nits and allow the child return to class. The adult should re-check the child at least every three to four days for the next 2-3 week to ensure that no further contact with other active cases of head lice exists and that the child is truly past it.
A "Live-Bug-Only" policy means that whether a child has a nit or not, the child can go to class so long as no one sees a bug on the child's head. We are not in favor of this policy and believe it to be flawed. The bugs act as chameleons, easily blending in with their environment, making them incredibly challenging to see. They move quickly away from light (9 inches per minute) and camouflage themselves within the hair. You could be looking right at the bug and not see it. Children have been sent to our salon by the school nurse who swears the child had nits but no bugs. After treating them and combing out 10, 30, and even 50 bugs, we know that this policy needs to be modified. As lice are way too easy to overlook, lax policies like this often lead to an infestation that can last for months, leaving parents, teachers, and administrators frustrated as the problem continues to spread.
