Head Lice Prevention Tips
There are many proactive measures you can take to help prevent a case of head lice.
Reduce your child's chances for re-infestation. Pulling the hair back, anytime they are playing with others, is very important. Keeping the hair in a ponytail, braid or bun minimizes the opportunity for head lice to transfer onto the head. Spray head daily with a non-toxic mint-based spray. Gel is encouraged for shorter hair as well.
Make head checks a part of your weekly routine. Obtain a good lice comb, such as the terminator comb, and run it through the hair once or twice a week, always scanning it for any evidence of lice or nits. Be sure each individual has their own lice comb. As part of your visit to No Lice Left Behind, we will guide you through the process of properly checking for head lice at home.
Play it safe. Although it is not as common to contract head lice through personal belongings, discourage family members from sharing hair tools and accessories (brush, comb, hair-ties, headbands), towels, clothes, scarves, hats and similar items.
Educate yourself. Be aware of the signs of head lice (itching, movement in the hair, swollen glands, sleepiness after what is considered a good night’s rest, rash at the back of the neck). Keep yourself aware of when your child has contact with active cases of head lice. If a child does have contact, take extra time to check them especially during these time periods.
Seek expert help. If you are not sure what you are looking for, seek expert assistance.
Be a friend- Tell a friend. Talking about head lice can break the stigma associated with lice and help minimize the spread of head lice. It’s very important that you notify everyone who may have come in contact with the person identified and treated for head lice, including your child’s school nurse. Remember, it's not just where they got lice from, but who they gave it to as well. Until everyone who’s been in contact with the person with head lice has been checked (and treated, when necessary), the outbreak will continue.
Stay calm. As part of your No Lice Left Behind treatment process, we will provide you with a simple checklist of in-home cleaning procedures. There is no need to expend a lot of time, money or energy on this process as head lice do not live for more than 24 hours away from the human head.
Be prepared. Lastly, NEVER let your guard down. No one is immune from head lice. If you have contact with an infested person, you can get it.
