Lice 101

Head Lice only attack people with poor hygiene.
False - Head lice are equal-opportunity parasites and prefer clean hair as it’s easier to adhere to than unwashed, oily hair.

Head Lice can jump from head to head.
False - Lice are six-legged, wingless insects that cannot hop, jump or fly. They crawl on the hair shaft and can be transferred through direct head-to-head contact.

Head Lice can live on my pet and be transferred to different parts of my house.
False - They move only from person to person, and live solely off human blood, never to and from another animal such as a dog or cat.

My child is more likely to get head lice than I am.
True - While parents and other adults are not immune to head lice, it is more common for children, especially ages 3-11, to catch it. Children engage in more head-to-head activities such as games, sports, sharing secrets, and sleepovers, making it easier to share the pesky bug.

Males and Ethnic groups are immune to head lice.
False - It is more common for females and Caucasians to contract head lice. While this may be true, don’t let it give you a false sense of security; under the right circumstances, no one is immune from head lice.

I will catch a disease from head lice.
False - While head lice are a big nuisance, it does not pose any health problems. Their saliva can cause allergic reactions in some, giving them the itchy sensation, however lice do not carry any illnesses or diseases from one person to another.

Over the Counter products to treat head lice are more dangerous than lice itself.
True - OTC products designed to treat head lice contain toxic chemicals and pesticides. Repeated exposure to these chemicals over an extended period of time has allowed the lice to grow resistance to the very products once used to kill them. Misreading instructions or improper treatment of these products is the biggest danger to your child and the possibility of re-infestation.

Cleaning the house is the biggest challenge of head lice.

False - While it is important to clean your environment after having treated your or your child’s head of head lice, it is not as big a task as one thinks. Because lice need to feed on human blood for survival, they will not survive off of a human head for more than 24 hours. Bedding and clothes you have come into contact with during the last 24 hours (post treatment) should be washed. Combs and hair accessories can be boiled in hot water. Couches can be covered with a bed sheet for 24 hours, and stuffed animals, pillows, etc. can either be bagged for 24 hours or placed in a dryer, as high heat will kill them.

I can drown the lice by washing my child’s hair daily.
False - While this sounds good in theory, it is not true. Lice lay their nits (eggs) on the hair shaft which are secured with fixative glue. Washing and combing the hair will not dissolve the glue, making it nearly impossible to remove from the hair shaft. Also, lice have the ability to hold their breath for nearly 2 hours and use their crab-like claws to hang onto the hair for dear life.
